Questions
Frequently asked questions
What is polio?
Polio (poliomyelitis) is a highly infectious disease caused by the poliovirus. It mainly affects children under five and can cause lifelong paralysis. There is no cure, but it can be prevented with vaccines.
How does polio spread?
Mostly through water or food contaminated with the faeces of an infected person, and less often through droplets from a cough or sneeze. Many infected people have no symptoms but can still spread the virus.
What are the symptoms of polio?
Most infected people have no symptoms or mild ones such as fever, tiredness, headache and pain in the arms and legs. A small number develop paralysis, usually of the legs, which can be permanent.
Is there a cure for polio?
No. There is no cure for polio. It can only be prevented, by vaccination.
Why do children get polio drops many times?
Each dose adds protection. Several doses during campaigns, together with routine immunisation, are needed to fully protect a child and to stop the virus spreading in the community.
Is the polio vaccine safe?
Yes. Polio drops and the polio injection have been used safely for decades and are recommended by the World Health Organization for every child. Extra doses during campaigns are also safe.
